LOVE ACTION (I BELIEVE IN LOVE) for BBC TV 'Multi-Coloured Swap Shop'
August 1981
Building on
the success of the second 'Human League Mk2' single 'Sound of the
Crowd 'which peaked at number 12. The third single 'Love
Action (I Believe in Love)' would go on to achieve number 3 in
the UK singles chart. It was a major breakthrough for the band who,
now firmly in the media spotlight, were invited to do various promotional slots on TV shows.
This is one of the
earliest, in August 1981 for British children's Saturday morning
show entitled "Multi-Coloured Swap Shop" hosted by Noel Edmonds
broadcast on BBC 1.
The band's appearance on Swap Shop is now one of their
most outwardly dated. But that is no bad thing, as now nearly
30 years later it clearly illuminates the originality of not only
the music, also Oakey's classic appearance and more
importantly Susan and Joanne's unique style.
This is now 4 months since her first appearance on British TV. Susan is now a
bit blonder and she and Joanne have begun to style themselves for TV
with coordinated dresses. The girls
unique dancing skills are fully on display for the first time.
Also interesting to note is the emergence of the classic Human
League stage formation - Susan on the left, Philip center, Joanne
right. (which can still be seen today)
Because of this and
similar TV appearances Susan and Joanne would soon be considered the epitome of
femininity and style by the media in 1981.
