ALL I EVER WANTED - 2001

The Human League’s most recent music video. From the Secrets album  of 2001.  The "All I Ever Wanted'  video ties into the Stanley Kubrick film "2001", but is actually a good analogy for THL in that year. Everyone is now in their forties  (even if timeless Susan still looks in her late 20s, something commented on at the time).

So to sell the video to the youth market the lighting was deliberately bright and contrast lowered to make THL appear younger. It works well for the darker Philip and Jo. But poor porcelain faced , blonde Susan is completely whitened out. If it wasn’t for her dark eye makeup and Little Black Dress  she would be almost  invisible.

The Trio's age would also become a contentious issue during promotion resulting in  MTV and the British national radio station refusing to playlist  the track because "it didn't fit their so called target demographic audience". While music critics universally declared 'Secrets' the best THL album since 'Dare'. No one bought it. Quite simply because no one (including some THL fans ) knew about it with no publicity.

A running joke is that the name of the album comes from the level of promotion it received.  To compound the problems the record label  'Papillion' was closed mid  promotion casuing the album to fail.  Susan now says  that period was one of the lowest periods of morale within the band and nearly caused them to call it a day.

This video demonstrates the quality of the album and what a wasted opportunity 'Secrets' was.
