29/08/08 - THL CONQUER THE USA (AGAIN)

The Human League at Jones Beach Amphitheatre, New York,  USA 22.08.2008

August was never going to be an easy month for THL. The Regeneration Tour of USA was going to be hard work in two senses. Firstly the band was going to play 21 Concerts in 29 Days including traveling from Coast to Coast, including a planned trip to Mexico and a Special THL Night in San Francisco.  It was going to be difficult in another sense; as the name suggests it was sold as a nostalgia tour.  In fact promoter Rick Shoor got the idea from the 'Here and Now' tour format; something the band did in the late 1990s. But the average American only knows two THL songs, even the Oakey/Moroder classic “Together in Electric Dreams” is alien to them, so the band had to work hard to win over the audience with mainly unfamiliar songs which didnt conform to the nostalgia theme; and in most cases they did. Fan and Professional reviews were generally outstanding. Although one fan reviewer criticized them for not playing “their hit Obsession” (actually a hit for US band Animotion not THL)

Playboy Magazine said:  “Finishing off the flashback were The Human League, who are officially new wave royalty”

There were of course some problems, Mexico got cancelled in its entirety for undisclosed reasons and poor ticket sales forced the move from Usana Amphitheatre to a smaller club venue. Rain managed to descend on Wolf Trap Washington DC, ensuring another Oakey barefoot performance on a treacherous wet stage.

As ever the totally 'twenty-something' looking Susan  proved yet again how effortlessly stunning she looks on stage (as demonstrated in the new pics in the photo section). But her and Joanne’s usually undisputed glamour crown was slightly usurped in the US Media by the now 50 year old and equally good  looking Belinda Carlisle, who hogged all the ‘unbelievably young looking’ headlines in the press. It is probably only fair that the US media looks after its own, but  least on this tour Susan and Joanne were regularly name checked.

Many high profile British bands throughout the years have tried to crack America and failed dismally. The Human League have done it twice and this August they proved that they can go back anytime and pick up where they left off.

02/08/08 - THE TIMES - MUSIC SUPPLEMENT

The Human League have featured in The Sunday Times 02nd July Music Supplement; appearing  along side  Heaven 17 and  Martin Fry.

The Times is the UK's most prestigious newspaper and the supplement magazine cover features  a group photo of all the members of the forthcoming 'Steel City tour.' (with Susan displaying  the longest legs in Synthpop). She  takes pride of place front and centre of the tour line up, helped in main by being the smallest member of the group, even in heels.
Inside, the article itself features a very flattering large promotional photo of Susan, Philip and Joanne under the unoriginal heading  'A league of their own' and an in depth interview.
Whoever the band have hired to do their publicity is certainly earning their money!

19/07/08 - LOVEBOX FESTIVAL 2008

This weekend has proved a particularly busy time for THL with a  Headliner slot at a major UK festival:

Susan at Lovebox

The Band played a headlining set at London's Lovebox Festival on Saturday 19th July.

Lovebox is a medium sized London festival that grew out of a dance club night thought up by Groove Armada’s Andy Cato and Tom Findlay, hence it attracts a younger 'Urban’ / ‘Trendy’ crowd, more so than say other more mainstream festivals. It was always going to be a challenging gig for THL as they had been afforded joint headline status, not just a retro novelty filler slot. Exacerbated by the fact that most of their hits would hail from a period before most of their audience were even born and even the most recent album (2001) would be when the audience were still in secondary school. To be fair, there was not much of a risk of the band being poorly received. From the moment the band’s iconic white equipment and Dare backdrop of Susan, Philip, and Joanne was unveiled the crown were hypnotized. Then from the first song “Seconds” they were eating out of the band’s hand. Most major hits were played, from “Tell Me When” to “Together in Electric Dreams” etc, even if it would have been the first time they were heard, save for the sound track of video games. Then the track everyone (in the world) knows “Don’t You Want Me” drove the audience wild. Susan, showing off her new hairdo, was onstage in a frilly knee length rainbow dress. The bright London sunshine (a rarity for a summers day in London) had made her don sunglasses for the start of the gig, unintentionally making her look even more the superstar that she is. But now for DYWM she had pushed them to the top of her head to begin her iconic soliloquy. Clearly having a great time on stage, she whipped up the crowd and got them to sing "I still love you" back at her, you know by this point they really meant it!

THL Stage Set                                                                                            Susan on venue giant video screen

The London Paper said this: "The Human League were an inspired addition to the line-up, proving their pioneering synth-pop hasn't aged at all since their heyday. Hits flew by until the opening bars of Don't You Want Me caused predictable pandemonium"

18/07/08 - LONDON TONIGHT INTERVIEW 2008

Susan, Joanne and Philip being interviewed on London Tonight 18/07/08 (click to play)

The band were interviewed live on UK TV's London Tonight; London's current affairs and news magazine program. Although a very short interview (4 mins) it is the highest profile UK TV interview they have done for a couple of years. London Tonight  goes out to about 10 million viewers, and thanks to a bit of research by the program's producers, the presenters asked some decent questions. Although the frequently committed 'crime' of getting the girls'  names mixed up was committed during the introductions.
All in a good interview, showing London a very smiley & bubbly Susan. And as if forecast by the recent R-Black portrait (see below) she has changed her hairstyle  for this years Festival / Tour season ( but thankfully not dyed it black.). She now has a 'long bob' hairstyle  which is almost reminiscent of 2001's  'Secrets tour.'
13/07/08 - THL PREPARE TO START US TOUR

Susan as 'That' cocktail waitress - Mezzanine Club Poster July 2008
(Click on Image for full size version)

After a quick headlining set at London's Lovebox Festival on the 19th of July, The Human League will soon move across the Atlantic for a busy tour of the US and Mexico, as the Headline Band  for 'The Regeneration Tour', which features supporting mainstay ABC and varying other bands.  It will be the band's largest tour of the USA for nearly 20 years with many venues already selling out. The Tour will travel from Coast to Coast throughout all of August and will also take in 3 major Mexican Cities on the tourist trail.

In addition THL will also play an independent gig in San Francisco's famous Mezzanine Club supported by 'Naked Eyes' and 'New Wave City' DJs Skip and Shindog.

DJ Skip has kindly provided us with an advance copy of the Mezzanine's  flyer / poster artwork for the gig. Drawn by famous rock artist 'R-Black',  the poster  interestingly features a pop art image of Susan (her second in 2 months) where she is portrayed as the infamous cocktail waitress from 1981's "Don't You Want Me",  but with unexplained black hair.
Either she is planning a major style change for the tour , which wouldn't exactly be out of character; or (and more likely) it is a clever allusion to Joanne by the artist.

13/07/08 - SULLEY.NET  REACHES 100K MILESTONE

This website usually measures its 'success' in that  by the end of each week, we've not narked Susan enough for her to sue us!  So you will forgive a bit of self congratulation  in reporting that today the site had its 100,000th  visitor. (Live counter display is at the bottom of the homepage)

According to our statistics provider: www.statcounter.com the 100K visitor was a private  IP from Tokyo, Japan.
Bearing in mind that this site was originally set up for a few dozen people on the Secrets Forum in 2006,  it's still a bit of a surprise that it is so popular. Of course the reason people visit this site isn't because of the poorly written HTML/Java or cheapo graphics, it's all down to the international popularity of a certain blonde pop star from Sheffield.

The next milestone is the Million visitor point, which at the sites present net traffic rate should happen sometime in 2013. Be that as it may, but we fully expect Susan and THL to still be going strong and touring then.
Obviously a new album release could put the million mark years earlier.

18/06/08 - THE STEEL CITY TOUR 2008

ABC, THL AND HEAVEN 17 - SHEFFIELD APRIL 2008
From Left: Martin Fry (of ABC), Joanne Catherall, Philip Oakey, Susan, (of THL),  Martyn Ware, Glen Gregory (of Heaven 17)

As if one major tour in a year  isn't enough for The Human League, they have announced that as well as the US they will also tour the UK later this year.

For this 'traditional' end of year tour they will be joined by two other legendary Sheffield bands: Martin Fry's 'ABC'  and 'Heaven 17' with Martyn Ware and Glen Gregory. The tour name is a reference to all 3 bands' home town, Sheffield.

THL and H17s histories are so interwoven it makes this tour of historic
significance. There is not enough space here to go into the history between Philip Oakey and Martyn Ware, save to say that Susan and Joanne owe their careers to the events between Oakey and Ware in October 1980. You can find out why here

To publicize the tour, everyone had a get together for photos in Sheffield's Peace Gardens, which resulted in this photo taken and provided by THL right hand man David Beevers. Conspicuous by his absence is H17  member Ian Craig Marsh, who is taking a sabbatical from performing.

The Tour will take in the following venues:

Sun 30th Nov - Glasgow Academy
Mon 1st Dec - Newcastle Academy
Wed 3rd Dec - Nottingham, Royal Concert Hall
Thur 4th Dec - Liverpool Echo Arena
Fri 5th Dec - Brighton Centre
Sat 6th Dec - Bournemouth Arena
Mon 8th Dec - London Hammersmith Arena
Wed 10th Dec - Manchester Apollo
Thur 11th Dec - Wolverhampton Civic
Fr 12th Dec - Newport Centre
Sat 13th Dec - Sheffield Hallam FM Arena

01/05/08 - SUSAN AND JOANNE FEATURE IN ART EXHIBITION

Fitzallan Street taxi rank - The night Phil met Susan & Joanne"
By Pete Mckee 2007

Although the 'pathologically modest' Susan regularly protests to interviewers that she "isn't a big star";  every once in a while comes a little cultural reference that acts as a reminder that, more than  just being a star, she is in fact a Pop Icon!

In this case, she and Joanne (for whom Icon status equally applies) have featured in a painting by renowned artist Pete Mckee. His exhibition of  34 'Pop Art ' style paintings entitled "33 1/3 " characterizes key musical events and music culture.  One of the most prominent pieces features Susan and Joanne's stylized caricatures entitled "Fitzallan Street taxi rank - The night Phil met Susan & Joanne". The painting depicts 'the girls' arriving in Sheffield city centre for that night out in the Crazy Daisy club in October 1980, which would change pop history. The reference to film "The Empire Strikes Back" in the background dates the period perfectly.

Mckee has now sold his original works, each lot starting at £333, it isn't known what the Susan and Joanne original went for but it won't have have been cheap. However for anyone interested in a copy,  reproduction canvas prints are available for £85 on his website.

20/04/08 - THL PLAY IN THEIR HOME TOWN

Susan  -  Sheffield Carling Academy 20/04/08

Playing in Sheffield is not a unique event for the band. They played a date on the 'Dare tour 2007 in Sheffield and have done so in the past. But a ‘home town’ gig always creates a big interest. So for the opening week of Sheffield's new ‘Carling Academy’ venue, who better to play a gig than Sheffield's premier band. The band  played a special one off gig, to a energetic near sell-out crowd on a wet South Yorkshire Sunday evening.

Philip Oakey very poignantly dedicated the gig to the families of Susan and Joanne, who were in the crowd. For ensuring that the girls, and therefore the whole band , would never leave Sheffield.   Another piece of symbolism, is that the new venue (formerly Roxy’s Nightclub) is just 400 metres from '20 High Street', the site of the former ‘Crazy Daisy Nightclub’. Where, 28 years ago Philip famously discovered the then teenage Susan and Joanne and created a pop folklore legend.

The band now prepares for the Lovebox festival and later to cross the Atlantic for the August tour of the USA.

22/03/08 - HAPPY BIRTHDAY SUSAN

Today Susan celebrates her 45th birthday!

Now usually it is considered unforgivable to mention a lady’s age, even if it is well known. But Susan is fortunate in that she seemingly inhabits a parallel universe when it comes to looking her age. Comment from fans and critics alike are usually that she looks between 10 and 20 years younger than she is. This website is a bit biased so cannot comment further. But when even non-fans come out with remarks like the one found on efestivals. You know there is a lot of truth in it!!

…that blonde singer (Susan is it?)  I thought that surely can’t be her, she looks like she’s 25… (efestivals.com)

Susan might be 45 in human years, but with her unique biology it seems she has possibly just turned 29 today!

In all seriousness, comments in the guestbook, others seen in blogs and some communicated privately are why we have chosen to highlight her age today (even if it takes us off the Christmas card list):

She, and the equally attractive and equally 45 year old Joanne C, are role models and an inspiration to women in their thirties/forties. In an industry where successful female popstars in their thirties, let alone forties can be counted in single figures. Susan and Joanne’s continuing massive popularity with the public, sticks two fingers up to the ageism and sexism of the music industry. And they are actually becoming more popular with age.

So all that remains to say is Happy birthday Susan, on behalf of her thousands of fans.
